What to See and Do in Jersey

Jersey is the southernmost island in the English Channel just off the North West coast of France, it is a self governing Island and not under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom. This beautiful Island is famous for the Jersey cow and the TV series Burgerac in the eighties. It has the benefit of the warmer Northern France weather and is a popular holiday destination for all age groups from both France and England. You will find plenty to do on the Island of Jersey from family days out, historic sites, museums, lovely beaches and arts and crafts.

Jersey has some fantastic heritage to visit and some examples of this can be seen in La Hougue Bie. This location is the home of a Neolithic burial mound that is dated to over 5,500 years ago. The area has been excavated to accommodate tourists and there are even geological and archaeological galleries to view of the area. Other historic places of interest include Elizabeth Castle from the 13th century in St Aubins Bay, Jersey war tunnels of St Lawrence and the Napoleonic Army Barracks.

There is some lovely wines made on the Island and the La Mare Vineyards are more than happy to take you through the process of winemaking and distilling. For jam lovers there is a shop that sells the gorgeous local apple brandy jam as well as other local marmalades and mustards. These little demonstrations of local produce make a great family day out and most of the areas cater for children with adventure parks and play areas. The Jersey lavender farm is another attraction showing how the working farm distils lavender oil and explains the process in detail.

Jersey is rife with wildlife and taking time to walk around the islands coasts is both scenic and refreshing. There are nature reserves, a Zoo that the kids will love and water parks with slides and a crèche if you fancy some time out for a coffee. There are plenty of beaches in Jersey and dependant on the time of year you visit can see some nice sun bathing days.

The food in Jersey is a fusion of French and English where use of local produce has been incorporated into a varied diet. Many of the hotels have fantastic restaurants and the local towns are filled with an excellent variety of eating houses and brassieres.
